To remain instrument current, the regulation requires that within the preceding 6 calendar months from the month of the flight, a person perform and log at least; 6 instrument approaches, holding procedures and tasks, and intercepting and tracking courses through the use of navigational electronic systems.

YES, the ATD can keep you current as long as you're not out of currency.  However, once out of instrument currency an Instrument Profiency Check (IPC) will be required in an airplane with and instructor.  

As of 7/15/22, all flights in the ATD are by appointment only.  Times are flexible for morning, afternoon and evenings.  Weekends are also available.

 

The use of an  ATD is not restricted.  But my experience has shown that every 3 months of instrument approaches (3-6 approaches), holding patterns (1-2) and proper use of phraseology and ATC instructions is very useful.
